A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL
An overview of past, present, and future air traffic control measures are presented. Instrument Landing System (ILS), Instrument Flight Rule (IFR), airborne radar beacons, air traffic controllers, reliance on voice communication and holding patterns are examined from the point of view of their weaknesses and short comings. Takeoff and landing problems associated with high density traffic areas such as Los Angeles, New York and Chicago are also discussed. Possible solutions to airport conjestion include giving fricrity to airlines during peak hours, restricting general aviation flight into heavy density airports to off peak hours, and using a system of economic penalties that would increase fees at busy airports. A general discussion on transponders, a system which would permit a more accurate poistioning of flights than is presently possilbe, is included.
