SYSTEM CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF AIRBORNE TRAFFIC DISPLAYS
One concept for increasing capacity and efficiency of the terminal area is to provide aircraft with cockpit displays which present traffic information, the object being to extend the visual senses of the pilot in such a way that he can operate in IMC much the same way as he does presently in VMC on an IFR flight plan. The traffic display would also serve to give pilots the air traffic control "picture" which they now have, but will gradually lose as voice communications are replaced by the digital data link.
