THE AIRPORT BAGGAGE-HANDLING SYSTEM-AN EVALUATION METHOD
This report presents an approach to analyzing existing and proposed air-terminal baggage-handling systems. The major subsystems analyzed in the model are: Baggage check-in, baggage conveyance, baggage sorting, baggage trains, aircraft loading and unloading, and baggage claiming. Nomographs are used to display quantitatively the factors controlling the baggage-flow process. Using direct manpower and equipment costs, an operator can compare the penalties resulting from insufficient capacity during periods of peak demand with the cost of idle facilities and manpower during the remaining periods. He also can compare various layouts or design modifications on a total performance and cost basis. The model presented provides means of identifying the limiting constraints of air-terminal baggage-handling systems and of selecting cost-effective systems for meeting existing and projected demands.
