Effect of Bridge Deck on Performance of GRS Bridge Abutments
The purpose of this study is to determine how the bridge deck affects the static and dynamic performance of the geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) bridge abutments. This research involves a numerical model representing the realistic field conditions of GRS bridge abutments, including a reinforced soil wall and a single-span deck that laterally restrains the top of the wall, rather than an equivalent surcharge load only. The numerical simulation was used to evaluate the effects of horizontal restraint from the deck on the GRS wall displacements and reinforcement loads at the end of construction and under harmonic base acceleration. The results of the numerical analysis revealed significant differences in the performance of GRS bridge abutments under static and dynamic loading when the bridge deck effect was considered. Notably, the inclusion of a bridge deck led to a substantial reduction in facing lateral displacements, lower geogrid loads, and improved performance in terms of sill horizontal deflection and settlement.
