Evolution of Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Slopes and Earth Retaining Structures in Pennsylvania for Transportation

Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) slopes and earth retaining structures have been widely used for transportation structures in Pennsylvania in the last 15 years. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) have developed manuals, specifications, and details regarding design and construction of these structures given the local conditions. These documents are based on Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines but incorporate specific requirements given the local geology and DOT preferences. This presentation covers the evolution of these available resources for design and presents the construction of a few local case studies. The lessons learned regarding these technologies are highlighted. In particular, the use of hybrid GRS systems is presented as a successful new technique. All the projects presented were designed and monitored during construction by the authors.
