RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE STOWED ROTOR V/STOL CONCEPT
This paper reviews the development of the Sikorsky Stowed Rotor concept for high speed V/STOL aircraft from its conception in 1949 to the present. The philosophy behind this concept is discussed along with its significant advantages and major problem areas. New design approaches and application studies of the Stowed Rotor against current high speed V/STOL missions are described. Results of recent flight simulator studies and wind tunnel tests are presented which confirm the feasibility of this concept.
