DESIGN APPROACH TO COMMERCIAL ROTOR VTOL
Recent developments have extended rotor VTOL into the high-performance category required for economic inter-city operations. This has been achieved through: (1) advances in propulsion and structures technology; (2) increased knowledge of the behavior of rotor systems; (3) experimental and simulator investigations of unloaded, tilting, stoppable and stowable rotors, and rotor/wings and (4) design investigations indicating high probability of economical payload-fractions for mission profiles of interest. This technological base is examined and the candidate rotor VTOL configurations which it makes available are identified and analyzed. The applicable time-frame is determined and preliminary design requirements are derived. The candidate configurations and their variants are analyzed on a comparative basis against this set of preliminary requirements.
