AN INVESTIGATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL DISTURBANCE AND DAMAGE THROUGH ROAD TRAFFIC IN URBAN AREAS--NOISE AND AIR POLLUTION
UNTERSUCHUNG DER UMWELTBELASTIGUNG UND UMWELTSCHADIGUNG DURCH DEN STRABENVERKEHR IN STADTGEBIETEN--LARM UND ABGASE
This is a nine-volume study of environmental disturbance and damage due to road traffic in Western European urban areas. The Commission of the European Community assigned the study to the West German Minister of Transport who contracted it to the Association of German Engineers (VDI). The main emphasis of the study was to determine the total economic costs due to noise and exhaust gas pollution from urban road traffic. The first four of the eight studies deal with noise and the last four with air pollution. Two other important aspects were the present extent of environmental disturbance and the psychological and physiological effects of environmental stress. A paradigm-city composed of twelve different types of residential streets was used in the study. These twelve types of streets were abstracted from five European cities (Amsterdam, Brussels, Cologne, Lyon, and Verona). Although the study used a data base largely limited to the Federal Republic of Germany, the international character of the features of the paradigm-city permits application of the study's findings to other countries.
