EARTH PRESSURE AND SKIN FRICTION MEASURING CELL
An instrument (Fig. 4) has been developed to measure simultaneously both the normal earth pressure and skin friction on well foundations, piles etc. The instrument essentially consists of three parts; (1) the casing; (2) the earth pressure cell and (3) the cantilever. The casing protects the sensitive parts of the instrument from accidental damages in handling. The earth pressure cell is 4 in. (10 cm) in diameter and 3/4 in (1.9 cm) in thickness and is provided with a sensitive diaphragm. An electrical resistance strain gauge bonded to the inner surface of the diaphragm serves as the sensing element. By applying known pressures on the cell and measuring the corresponding strain, the cell is calibrated. The cantilever is square in section and is screwed into the closed end of the casing. The earth pressure cell is screwed on to the other end of the cantilever is such a way that the face containing the diaphragm is flush with the face of the casing. When a frictional force acts parallel to the face plate, the cantilever deflects, which is recorded by four other strain gauges bonded to each of its faces. Again by applying known loads on the face plate and taking corresponding strain readings, the centilever is calibrated.
