Decision support for new equilibriums in the railway system

The project develops quantitative impact relationships that considers the dynamics between reliability and demand for rail transport, as well as knowledge about how much additional capacity can be achieved with adjusted timetables or with minor investments and thus what needs to be done to maintain the reliability of the rail system when traffic volumes have increased. The results of the project provide knowledge on how new equilibria in the transport system may be achieved through iterative scenario planning, where cost-effective measures and increased reliability generate a shift from road to rail that in turn does not adversely affect reliability and thus makes new and more sustainable equilibria possible. Overall, the project provides decision support for how rail can contribute to making the Swedish freight transport system more sustainable.
