INCREASING ENERGY COSTS WILL BOOST CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION
Two reasons are given for the use of concrete in construction in the current energy situation: concrete requires less energy to produce than any other major construction material; and concrete lends itself well to the design and construction of buildings that have excellent thermal characteristics. Although portland cement itself requires much energy to produce, the other materials of cement - mineral aggregates and water - require very little energy. It is expected that the growth in concrete consumption will increase faster than the growth in gross national product and in total construction volume - a pattern similar to that observed in Europe and Japan.
