STUDY ON COMPACTION AND SETTLEMENT FOR EMBANKMENTS
IN SOIL COMPACTION FOR EMBANKMENTS, IT IS SHOWN THE EXTENT OF COMPACTION WHICH WOULD BE REQUIRED FOR MINIMIZING THE DAMAGE OF SETTLEMENT OR DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT; A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DEGREE OF SOIL COMPACTION AND THE SETTLEMENT IS DERIVED. THE AUTHOR PROPOSES A YIELD COMPRESSIVE STRESS AND, USING STRESS-STRAIN-TIME CURVES WHICH ARE PROVIDED BY COMBINING THE VALUES OF YIELD COMPRESSIVE STRESS WITH THOSE OF COMPRESSIVE CHARACTERISTIC OBTAINED FROM COMPRESSION TESTS OF STATICALLY COMPACTED SOIL TEST SPECIMENS (30CM. DIAMETER AND 3.75CM. HEIGHT), HE GIVES CALCULATIONS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE STRESS-SETTLEMENT RELATIONS BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD. PROPOSALS ARE ALSO MADE FOR PROCESSES TO REDUCE THE SETTLEMENT OF COMPACTED SOIL TOGETHER WITH MEASURES FOR PREVENTING SETTLEMENT OF PART OF EMBANKMENT NEAR TO THE STRUCTURE. FURTHER, WITH TEST EMBANKMENTS, THE VALUES OF MEASUREMENT OF SETTLEMENT ARE GIVEN IN REFERENCE TO THE RESULTS OF ANALYSIS. /AUTHOR/
