Evaluating the Potential Use of Electric Pickup Trucks in VDOT Using Field Test Data
In December 2022, the Virginia Transportation Research Council completed the technical assistance effort “Potential for Electrification of VDOT Vehicle Fleet” that investigated how electric trucks might integrate into the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT’s) fleet. The study was based on daily mileages of a sample of VDOT’s current pickup truck fleet and manufacturer-supplied ranges of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric trucks. This project will build upon the previous effort via two objectives: to field test the range, charging, general capabilities of the Ford F-150 Lightning and its associated charging infrastructure, and to capture the experiences of VDOT field staff when using the vehicle. Recommendations on possible future usage of electric pick-up trucks within VDOT will be made based on these results.
