Administration of Highway and Transportation Agencies. Implementation of Artificial Intelligence Programs in State and Local Departments of Transportation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an emerging topic of immediate interest for transportation agencies. While sometimes AI is typically discussed in the context of generative language models, it is important to define the use of AI within the state Department of Transportation (DOT) activities context. NCHRP Project 23-12: Artificial Intelligence Opportunities for State and Local DOTs – A Research Roadmap produced the Web-Only Document 403, “Artificial Intelligence Opportunities for State and Local DOTs: A Research Roadmap”. The objective of the research was to develop a research roadmap that identifies and prioritizes research needs that will provide state and local DOTs with a better understanding of AI, what activities are suited for AI, and the potential ways AI could be applied. The identification of successful case studies was a need identified under NCHRP Project 23-12. Similar research topics were also submitted by DOTs under NCHRP 20-24 submissions. The objective of this research is to document AI implementation cases to help State DOTs understand the use of AI in transportation and to develop policies to maintain the public's trust while advancing other AI applications in transportation.
