Uncertainty analysis of pavement lifecycle carbon footprint
Global warming has raised great concern among governments and organizations. The engineering community has been actively developing innovative, efficient construction methods and alternative materials, as well as analyzing greenhouse gas (GHG, or “carbon”) emission and reduction strategies. Pavement construction is one of the most important elements in infrastructure, and its carbon emissions have been proven to be significant. However, the previous studies usually lack uncertainty for the quantitative results, which affects the representativeness of the estimations of pavement carbon emissions. This study takes the case of the construction of the West Coast Expressway Ba-Dong-Liao to Jiu-Kuai-Chou Project under the jurisdiction of the Directorate General of Highway. Roadprint, a pavement life cycle assessment tool, is used to evaluate carbon emissions in various lifecycle stages, such as material production, construction equipment operation, transportation, and operation/maintenance. This study examines the significance of emissions at each stage of the pavement project, Furthermore, this study explores the uncertainty of several parameters, such as carbon emission factors, transportation distance, and maintenance/preservation frequency, and discusses how uncertainty affects carbon footprint in pavement engineering life. The assessment results shall be incorporated into the planning/design process for future pavement projects
