HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE OF RUBBLE MOUND BREAKWATER REASONS FOR FAILURE SCANDINAVIAN EXPERIENCE
The interaction between rubble mound breakwaters and waves has been subject to intensive research by numerous authors. Most research was of empirical or semi-empirical nature, however. One reason for this is the highly turbulent nature of flow condition including boundary conditions which change for every fraction of a second. This report is based on research during recent years which attempts to clarify certain basic aspects of the problem by a simplified approach splitting the problem up in its single parts. This research included measurements of wave forces or pressure on a sphere by means of pressure gauges on either side of the sphere which was located in a cover layer consisting of identical spheres. Furthermore the importance of friction between cover and sublayer was investigated as well as the effects of different permeability of core--as well as sublayer. Finally some computational evaluation on breakdown forces for a cover layer of identical spheres were undertaken. The result of this research was supplemented by review of data by other researches explaining details involved in the hydraulic performance of rubble mound structures.
