STUDY TO EVALUATE THE TOOLS AND PROCEDURES FOR ASSESSING THE SAFETY OF EXISTING GAS DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS
The study aimed at finding how the safety of natural gas distribution systems is related to their physical condition. The physical methods and equipment presently being used by gas distribution system companies for this purpose were reviewed and evaluated, as well as statistical data on leaks and failures. A review was made of (a) nondestructive testing techniques that appear applicable to the problem, and (b) current research and development directed to distribution system evaluation. An assessment was made of relative cost effectiveness of the various techniques.
