Twinned 450 mm Waterline Provides Future Water Needs for YVR Groundside Developments and the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is undergoing a project to realign the westernmost 2.2 km section of Ferguson Road on the Sea Island. This involves extending the existing Ferguson Road at McDonald Road to provide an improved corridor with wider travel lanes, paved bike shoulders, and a new multi-use pathway to accommodate all road users, the installation of two 450 mm Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), fully restrained watermains and associated appurtenances, and drainage, electrical, and communication infrastructure to service future developments along Ferguson Road and the adjacent wastewater treatment plant on Iona Island. The Project addressed several design and construction considerations and constraints that ultimately impacted the final geometry, configuration, and material selection of the proposed watermain infrastructure. This paper summarizes how the noted considerations and constraints influenced the final design of the twin watermains, how the watermain material and restraint system was selected, and the Project construction progress.
