Used Oil Recycling: Getting Extra Mileage Out of Your Motor Oil
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates used oil under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976 – a federal statute that encourages environmentally sound methods for managing waste and regulates the generation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. EPA’s definition of used oil is “any oil that has been refined from crude oil or any synthetic oil that has been used and as a result of such use is contaminated by physical or chemical impurities. Simply put, used oil is exactly what its name implies—any petroleum-based or synthetic oil that has been used.” This technical brief provides information on the recycling of used motor oil.
