FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT, CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION PROBLEMS AND RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL CONFLICTS AND PROBLEMS OF THE ICE STRESSED COASTAL AREAS OF ALASKA
The purpose of the investigation was to: 1. Identify facilities development problems in ice stressed coastal waters of Alaska. 2. Identify construction and operational environmental conflicts in Alaska, and 3. Use imagination and experience in coastal engineering, and arctic engineering and arctic environment, to postulate ideas to avoid problems of engineering and construction conflicts with ecology of the areas involved. This investigation had a three-fold approach as follows: 1. Interviews with people who have had previous experience in arctic engineering, arctic environment, coastal engineering, and ecology of the arctic. 2. A bibliographic survey of past work done in the world arctic and a review of selected reference material as applicable to the present investigation. 3. A reconnaissance survey on a macroscopic scale of the Alaskan arctic field areas along the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea Coasts as applicable to the assigned tasks. In addition to the above, special beach samples were taken at leisure for the use of other scientists of the University of Alaska. The findings are discussed in the paper, and, as a result, recommendations for potential engineering construction are made. In addition, suggestions are made for certain ecological studies.
