Recycled and replacement materials market analysis

The NTRO, in partnership with EY, delivered the Recycled and Replacement Materials Market Analysis report as part of Infrastructure Australia’s Market Capacity Program. The research delivers up-to-date estimates on the opportunity to use recycled and replacement materials and analyses the market for recycled materials for major infrastructure road projects, identifying market constraints and opportunities to address these. Road infrastructure building and maintenance currently uses large volumes of construction materials each year, providing a major opportunity to incorporate recycled materials. An increase in the adoption of recycled materials in infrastructure will reduce landfill and greenhouse gas emissions, while also making substantial progress towards developing a circular economy, where end-of-life materials are valued resources. Through engagement of over 350 industry and government leaders, five key opportunities were found to address market constraints impacting the uptake of recycled materials in road infrastructure: improving awareness and understanding of recycled materials, specifications and opportunities; actions to enhance confidence in using recycled materials, including developing and updating specifications and standards and driving cultural changes to reward innovation; addressing regulatory issues to facilitate industry development and advance market opportunities; modernising and expanding recycling infrastructure and workforce capacity; and driving demand through sustainable procurements and market signalling, including accommodating cost impacts in public procurement tenders, provisioning supporting standards, specifications, and supplier and cost information. The NTRO Conference presentation will provide highlights of the demand forecasting and market analysis for recycled materials, demonstrating that recycled materials have an important role in the future construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of road infrastructure.
