An Analysis of the Operational Costs of Trucking: 2024 Update
This report presents the results of a survey of for-hire motor carriers on 2023 operational costs. The survey, conducted during February 2024-May 2024, included 150,869 truck-tractors, and 395,934 trailers. Data includes: regional costs, fleet size, driver compensation, fuel costs, equipment costs, truck insurance premiums, and other marginal costs. Overall, the average cost per mile for motor carriers, in 2023 was $2.27 per mile, a 0.8% increase over 2022. Costs per hour were $91.27 in 2023 as compared to $90.78 in 2022, up 0.5%. Fuel costs in 2023 were 55.3 cents per mile, a decrease of 13.7% from 2022's 64.1 cents per mile. Lease or purchase payments for trucks and trailers increased 8.8%, insurance premiums increased by 12.5%, and repair and maintenance costs increased by 3.1%. The average driver wage per-mile increased to 77.9 cents per mile in 2023, a 7.6% increase from 2022's 72.4 cents per mile.
