THREAT DETECTION TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR CHILD PEDESTRIANS SAFETY-VOLUME ONE AND VOLUME TWO
The research aim was to identify an efficient, safe, street-crossing behavior sequence for children; and to develop/pilot-test programs to train the sequence in public schools. The target audience is Kindergarten-to-third graders in urban schools. Phase I work included behavioral analysis to find an optimum street-crossing behavior sequence; evaluate behavior-modification techniques; investigate constraints (cost, school resource limitations, school personnel training/attitudes). Phase II developed three programs which were evaluated for adequacy, feasibility, cost. They are: (1) Basic Program-teacher introduces program, behavior sequence; children practice sequence through games played on lo-fi simulated classroom "street" and later on real streets (traffic blocked). (2) Film Program-same as Basic, except program, behavior sequence introduced via film starring Captain Kangaroo. (3) Simulator Program-same as Basic, except children practice sequence in hi-fi classroom simulator, using two rear-projected synchronized color films of moving traffic. Phase III pilot-tested training programs were conducted in three urban Pittsburgh schools for effectiveness, permanency, training-materials adequacy, using one pretest, two posttests. All three programs considerably reduced unsafe street-crossing behavior. Film, Simulator programs were generally superior to Basic; little difference was found between Film and Simulator programs in effectiveness, permanency. It was recommended that Film, Simulator programs undergo further testing. /NTIS/
