ANALYSIS OF PROBLEMS IN THE APPLICATION OF RADAR SENSORS TO AUTOMOTIVE COLLISION PREVENTION
The report describes the results of the second phase of an investigation of the practicality and technical feasibility of using radar sensors for automatic automotive braking systems. Radar signatures of typical vehicular targets at 35 GHz and 60 GHz are shown. Results are compared with 10 GHz signatures obtained in Phase I. Tracking radar systems and their feasibility in the automotive application are discussed with respect to the problem of potentially high false alarm rates caused by highway curves. The problem of intersystem blinding is considered in depth, and estimations are made of the effectiveness of polarization isolation and frequency-hopping in reducing blinding effects. The performance of diplex radar systems in blinding configurations is discussed. Preliminary specifications are recommended as guidelines for judging the acceptability of prototype systems for marketing. Performance tests for verifying a system's compliance with the suggested specifications are outlined and discussed.
