THERMAL ANALYSIS FOR COMPLEX STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS

Modern high-performance ships contain a variety of geometrically complex extreme temperature systems and environments within the hull structure. The thermal interaction between these systems and surrounding structural components has created formidable problems in ship design, due to adverse temperatures and temperature gradients in critical components within and apart from the hull structure. To resolve problems of this nature, a computer code based on the finite difference method has been developed to evaluate temperature distributions and heat flows in these complex structural systems during ship design. This program has the capability to evaluate Multidimensional heat flow with simultaneous conduction convection, and radiation heat transfer in the transient or steady state. The computer code is tailored for use in design oriented thermal analyses. Therefore, changes in structural configuration, materials, fluids, boundary conditions, etc., are easily implemented and compatibility between the ship structure and the enclosed thermal system or environment is readily achieved.
