LONG LIFE MARINE GAS TURBINES
The paper describes the long life heavy duty gas turbine being built for power generation and industrial purposes. Reference is made to the good fuel consumption rate of this unit and to its suitability for marine propulsion. Various ways of improving the fuel rate are mentioned and two examples are given. For a large tanker, a combination of steam and gas turbines is proposed, resulting in a fuel rate of 0.384 lb/shp hr, using residual fuel. For a small cargo ship requiring 11,000 shp the regenerative cycle gas turbine is suggested and offers an all-purpose fuel consumption of 0.452 lb/shp hr. In each case use is made of hydraulic reversing transmission.
