Research Into Impact of Changing Current MOT Requirements

There is a possibility that the frequency of the United Kingdom (UK)’s MOT (Ministry of Transport) Test could be reduced, in order to ensure that it keeps better track of new technologies and best practices. The authors present the findings of an investigation into the behavioral impacts of possible changes to the MOT for light vehicles. The study focused on the response of drivers to changes to the scheduling of the MOT. A survey was made of almost 500 vehicle owners, with a series of four focus groups. The findings imply that any change to the MOT system that reduces the frequency of tests would be unpopular, leading to a reduction in overall vehicle safety in the UK. If the frequency of MOT tests were to be reduced, some drivers claim that they would take more responsibility for checking and maintaining their vehicles. But the admission by others that they would be unlikely to do so, implies that their vehicles would go unchecked between MOT tests, leading to increased safety risks. This must be taken into account regarding possible changes in the scheduling of MOT tests.
