Artificial Intelligence Frontiers in Transportation
Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are changing how people live, work, and travel. Safe, equitable deployment of AI innovations from self-driving taxis to automated asset-management systems will require transportation professionals to shift gears. This article begins with a look at the history of AI and key forces in AI's recent surge. AI applications in transportation are examined including: driver assistance systems, autonomous vehicles, logistics technology, structural health monitoring using computer-vision algorithms, and adaptive traffic control. The article ends with recommendations for implementing AI in transportation and the challenges of AI. Challenges discussed include biases in AI algorithms, protecting personal data and intellectual property, and AI's impact on the labor force.
