Comparative Study of Air and Ground Coupled Systems for Dielectric Constant Estimation of Pavement Using Surface Reflection Method
Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a widely adopted non-intrusive technology for evaluating the dielectric constant and thickness of pavement layers. The Surface Reflection Method (SRM) is commonly employed to estimate the dielectric constant of pavement materials, especially for thin layers. While Air-Coupled GPR (AC system) is extensively used, there remains confusion regarding the applicability of Ground-Coupled GPR (GC system). This study aims to investigate the suitability of both AC and GC systems for estimating the dielectric constant of homogeneous pavement materials using SRM. The study involves laboratory experiments using asphalt and dry sand. The GSSI 51600S antenna (GC system) and the GSSI 42000S antenna (AC system) were employed for data collection. The obtained results indicate the consistency and applicability of AC system for evaluating relatively homogeneous pavement materials using SRM. To facilitate the use of GC system with SRM, the study proposes a calibration method for using the 51600S antenna. The proposed calibration method addresses potential discrepancies and ensures reliable estimations of the dielectric constant. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the suitability and limitations of both GC and AC systems when combined with SRM for evaluating the dielectric constant of pavement materials. By demonstrating and validating the applicability of these GPR systems herein, this research contributes to the effective utilization of GPR technology in pavement evaluation and management.
