Regeneration Effects of Epoxy Compounds on Aged SBS Modified Asphalt
Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt is an important material to improve the quality of high-grade pavements and airport runways. It will deteriorate during its service life due to a combination of environmental factors, leading to pavement disease which triggers the maintenance and reconstruction. In this process, an amount of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) will be produced. For environment protection and resource reservation, RAP is usually regenerated by a rejuvenator. In this paper, reactive rejuvenators were prepared by epoxy compounds for regenerating aged SBS modified asphalt (A-SBSMA), and the changes in physical properties, rheological properties, chemical structure, and microscopic morphology of the regeneration of A-SBSMA before and after were investigated to evaluate the regeneration effect. Compared with traditional rejuvenators, the significant effect of reactive rejuvenators on the recovery of physical properties and rheological properties of A-SBSMA. By FTIR and microscopic morphology analysis, reactive rejuvenator can better recover the functional group species, broken SBS molecular structure, and network structure of A-SBSMA.
