SAN FRANCISCO VESSEL TRAFFIC SYSTEM TEST OF THE TRAFFIC ANALYSIS AND DISPLAY SUBSYSTEM

The report presents an experimental and analytical study of the traffic Analysis and Display subsystem (TAD) of the San Francisco Experimental Vessel Traffic System (VTS). The San Francisco Experimental VTS was designed to demonstrate the potential of a computer controlled automatic VTS that utilizes both radar sensors and voluntary movement reports from vessel in contiguous areas not served by radar coverage. Experimental studies were conducted to confirm performance parameters of the available operator services and the several modes of operation of the TAD subsystem, and to investigate a limited number of its human engineering characteristics. Analytical studies of the computer software design and its compatibility with the TAD hardware characteristics and VTS system performance requirements were made for the purpose of determining the potential for application of the VTS concept to other harbor traffic situations.
