A COMPARISON STUDY BETWEEN TUG-BARGE SYSTEMS AND CONVENTIONAL SHIP IN SELECTED UNITED KINGDOM-CONTINENTAL TRADES
Three types of systems were identified: barge carrying vessels, demountable ships (coupled barges for offshore voyages) and push/pull towing. The economic analysis used covers bulk grain, pulp and clay and takes into consideration capital investment, interest, operating costs and stevedoring including a comparison of the demands placed on port facilities. Under a wide range of assumption and conditions considered in the study, the relative costs per ton of cargo shipped by barges and conventional vessels suggest barges may be advantageous in a number of trades, however, each case must be considered on its own merits.
