TRAFFIC GENERATORS

Trip generation data collected at major traffic generators (places or facilities which generate or attract trips differently than can be predicted with normal transportation or travel modes) are summarized. The study related traffic counts taken at each facility to various characteristics of the facility such as size, number of employees, floor area, parking spaces provided, or number of persons. The data collection technique varied with each category of Land Use. Personal interviews were conducted at some sites to obtain occupancy figures, number of units, and to discuss the method of counting. Vehicular traffic counts were made at each selected site after the availability of background data and site characteristics were confirmed. A postcard survey was utilized for single family sites and one multi-family site to obtain a sample of occupancy, vehicle ownership and income level. An average return of 44 percent provided an adequate sample for expansion. The background data from 9 regional shopping centers was obtained from the center managers. Colleges, universities, and senior high schools were studied as well as mobile home parks, hospitals, regional parks, residentials, commercial recreation, restaurants, and industrial parks.
