ENGINEERING DATA SYSTEM FOR BEDROCK OCCURRENCES AND PROPERTIES

An evaluation program is described in which data on engineering characteristics of rock units are utilized in a classification program. This program includes characterization of rock units on the basis of tests on intact samples and on the basis of evaluation of in-situ rock properties. Classifications can be modified for particular types of projects and use tables can be developed for evaluation of rock units for use in specific projects. A computerized system for the storage and retrieval of information was developed in which input data are derived from laboratory and field testing as well as monitoring of rock behavior during consturction and subsequent operations of completed facilities. The development of the evaluation program involved a review of the geology of the state of Kentucky, and the organization and codification of the geological information to provide easy access for engineers and technicians. Current efforts are directed toward verifying and improving methodology set forth in this preliminary evaluation program.
