THE ALUMINUM VINYL FOR SHIPS' BOTTOMS

The effect of pigmentation on the performance of vinyl systems applied to steel when immersed in sea water with cathodic protection is discussed. In particular, aluminum pigment is compared to red lead, not only under sea water immersion, but also when alternated between this condition and fresh water immersion. The effect of variations in concentration of the aluminum pigment and of the thickness of the aluminum vinyl primers is described. Performance results of several ship trials where the aluminum vinyl system has been used as a bottom system are included. It is proposed that the aluminum pigment is more important in determining the performance of the system under cathodic protection than the binder, provided that the latter is resistant to alkaline attack. The effect of other metallic pigments in the vinyl primer is also described. (Author)
