ON SOME PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS ON THE EVALUATION OF THE FIRE RESISTANCE OF CLASS "A" DIVISIONS FOR MERCHANT SHIPS

The main target of the investigation was to determine, in the course of standard fire tests, the "temperature history" in most significant locations within metallic structures of IMCO type fire resisting insulated divisions. The data so obtained can be utilized by suitable theoretical treatment, in order to make an orientative appraisal of the fire resistance of current fire resistant bulkheads and decks for ships, bearing in mind some correlations amongst time, temperature, load and deformations. The need for the appraisal of the fire resistance of structures examined here lies in the well evidenced impact of creep in the alteration of the statics of a metallic structure even though the exposure to heat be of the order of hours. In the light of the above, one can say that the final temperature of a structure is not sufficient to evaluate its resistance to fire, and that an accurate evaluation of "Temperature history" is required instead.
