An Improved Bus Signal Priority Strategy Accounting for Downstream Stop Capacity

Without considering downstream bus stop capacity in the design of bus signal priority strategies, overflow of stopping buses happens frequently at the entry of bus stop, although bus obtains priority in signalized intersection. To this end, an improved bus signal priority strategy accounting for downstream bus stop capacity is proposed. Such a strategy is modeled to be an optimization and aims to minimize the constraints, including average delay per passenger, downstream stop capacity, and predicted bus service time. The solution of the strategy is determined by Gurobi. Finally, Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) is employed to carry out numerical simulations, and results show that the improved bus signal priority strategy can reduce the possibility of overflow at the downstream stop without increasing passenger delays, and it is obvious at low traffic flow.
