Comparative environmental assessment of a novel functionally integrated e-axle for passenger cars

Road transport significantly contributes to environmental issues. Efforts to reduce transport emissions include deploying electric vehicles and designing their powertrains for improved performance. This paper presents preliminary results of a novel functionally integrated electric axle (e-axle) developed within the EU project FITGEN. Using the Life Cycle Assessment method, the environmental impact of the FITGEN e-axle compared to the 2018 State-of-the-Art was assessed. Results found that the FITGEN e-axle reduced climate impacts and energy use by 26% and 38%, respectively. It also found critical aspects from an ecodesign and life cycle viewpoint: the improvement of components efficiency, the reduced usage of electronics due to component integration, and the use-phase electricity source. Thus, car industries may consider these aspects for improving the performance of electric powertrains.
