First Passenger Operation of a State-of-the-art Battery-Electric Multiple Unit (BEMU) in Germany

This paper presents the first fully approved battery-electric multiple unit in Germany in the last 60 years (Rittig, 2006). Furthermore, the authors describe the area of application and what to consider when deploying battery-electric trains. An economical and carbon footprint comparison is performed to show that even today the battery-electric train can be a viable alternative to diesel trains on regional lines. Under the given assumptions, a battery train fleet can be 20 % cheaper than a diesel fleet and the greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 98 %. Finally, the authors present some preliminary results from the ongoing vehicle test operation.
