Sample preparation method for quick characterization of reclaimed asphalt by FTIR spectroscopy
A quick characterization of the reclaimed asphalt (RA) at the mixing plant shortly after delivery would improve its management and enable an optimized use within the asphalt production. The RA bitumen characteristics regarding aging stage, additives or hazardous substances can be assessed by Fourier-transformation-infrared-spectroscopy (FTIR), which is typically applied by testing extracted bitumen. In order to save time, a procedure was developed that allows an identification within 15 minutes. Therefore, a sample of 2g RA is mixed with 10 ml of solvent in a small container, which was shaken until the bitumen is dissolved and centrifuged to separate the aggregates. The solvent/bitumen mix is taken from the container with a pipette, placed at the FTIR and measured after evaporation of the solvent. The results are suitable for identification of important parameters for the recycling process.
