Pick-up Points for Shared Autonomous Vehicle-based Mobility Services in Urban Areas: Demand Calculation and Locating Method
The shared, on-demand and almost door-to-door use of the autonomous vehicles is expected in the future. Points to pick up travelers are required to promote safety, comfort, and higher service quality. The authors propose a method to calculate the demand based on current car use and locate different pick-up points for shared autonomous vehicle-based mobility services considering urban environment, available services, and users’ preferences. The method is applied as a study case providing the main findings: (i) types of pick-up points are identified based on the purposes of serving demand; (ii) as the walking radius increases, the number of pick-up points decreases; (iii) the number of pick-up points on on-street parking and sections of a street is limited by the unavailability of space and streets with low traffic. The results support future urban planning on optimization of urban space.
