Effect of using different types of emulsions on the design of microsurfacing asphalt mixtures
Microsurfacing asphalt mixture is a preventive maintenance technology that involves the application of a mixture of modified bituminous emulsion, aggregate, filler, and water at room temperature. Although it is a widely used technology, further studies on the mix design procedures are necessary to ensure an adequate composition. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the influence of the bituminous emulsion type on the amount of water and filler in the mix design of microsurfacing. Different mixtures were prepared, varying the type of emulsion and the percentage of water and filler. It was found that the mix design of microsurfacing is a complex task because it is a system with chemical interactions strongly influenced by the composition of aggregates and bituminous emulsions.
