Division of Operations Research On-Call (ROC) Task #4 - Evaluation of Driveway Assistance Devices
State Route 60 (Rte 60), south of Duncan Fall, Ohio, in Muskingum County, is a two-lane road under construction. One travel lane must be closed to complete construction, leaving only one lane open for two-way general-purpose traffic. Rte 60 traffic will be controlled by traditional temporary traffic signals that allow one direction of traffic to traverse the work zone at a time. The driveways in the work zone will be controlled either by a driveway assistance device (DAD) or a temporary traffic signal. This research found that the DADs have higher driver compliance, reduce vehicle delay and queue lengths, lengthen work zones, and reduce construction costs compared to the temporary traffic signal.
