WAVE RESISTANCE AND VISCOUS RESISTANCE OF TANKER "REINE FABIOLA" WITH AND WITHOUT BULB

The sea trials data of tanker REINE FABIOLA, with and without bulb, were presented to the A.T.M.A. in 1972. Retrofitting the bow with a bulb was conducive to a gain of speed of 0.8 knots in ballast, of 0.5 knots in loaded condition. From model tests a gain of speed was predicted of 0.8 knots in ballast, nihil in loaded condition. From statistical anlaysis of ship performance, extended over 4 years, 1 year before the retrofitting of the ship with a bulb and 3 years afterwards, a gain of speed was ascertained of 1.02 knots in ballast and 0.46 knots in loaded condition. To explain the differences wave resistance was calculated, with and without bulb. Moreover, wind tunnel tests carried out on a model of the tanker with and without bulb, allowed viscous resistance to be ascertained. Identity of viscous resistance for the two bow shapes made clear that only wave resistance was responsible for the gain of speed obtained in service with the bulbous bow. Incidentally, the wind tunnel tests allowed the form factor K of viscous resistance to be established.
