SETTLEMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF PRECONSOLIDATED NATURAL SANDS
The settlements of footings on slightly overconsolidated sands loaded beyond the preconsolidation pressure have been investigated. Settlement calculations require a knowledge of the preconsolidation pressure, and of the modulus of deformation below and above the preconsolidation pressure. In-situ screw-plate, pressuremeter and penetration tests are described. The investigation was carried out at a test site (16 x 18 m) located close to an esker about 40-km west of Stockholm. The thickness of the investigated sand deposit was 8 m. Its thickness had been reduced about 16 m by excavation. The remaining 8 m of sand rested directly on the rock. The ground water level was located below the surface of the bedrock. The sand was overconsolidated due to the excavation.
