TRANSPORTATION AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS: A STUDY OF SUBSITUTION, STIMULATION AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS
This explanatory study of some of the behavioral and technical aspects of human interaction by transportation and telecommunication modes represents basic research into the analysis of travel demand. Included in the report are: an assessment of the current state-of-the-art in telecommunications technology; an evaluation of the potential for substitution and/or stimulation between transportation and telecommunications modes; and an annotated bibliography (153 references) of the pertinent literature. An analysis of comparative costs of travel (cost and time) versus telecommunications indicate that at current rates only the less effective audio-only or audio-augmented modes are less costly than travel. More sophisticated broad band telecommunication services do not seem to be economically feasible at present. Altered trip purpose mixes, shorter trip lengths, smoothed-out flow patterns and increased technical efficiency of the transport systems made possible by the computer-telecommunications application are some of the expected impacts on transport facilities.
