EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF ARCHING STRESSES ON BURIED VERTICAL CYLINDERS
This report describes the first phase of a sustained research effort to study arching stresses on buried structures caused by modulus mismatch (the difference in bulk modulus) between structure and surrounding medium. A series of duplicate tests was performed on cylindrical and disc structures specially designed to separate arching stresses from side-wall frictional effects. All tests were static, using 20-30 dry Ottawa sand at three different densities. The applied overpressure and the geometric configuration of the buried structures were varied to facilitate a study of the influence of these parameters on soil-structure interaction.
