THE STRUCTURAL USE OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE CONCRETE

The uses of various lightweight aggregates and their processes of manufacture in the U.K. are reviewed. The physical properties of lightweight concrete made with such aggregates are considered and compared with those of concrete made from dense aggregates. The variation in design criteria for concrete mixes and steel reinforcement as given in the British Standard Codes of Practice is highlighted, and practical aspects such as site batching, mixing and placing techniques, and standard testing routines are discussed. The types of surface finish obtainable with this type of concrete are indicated. The economics of using structural lightweight aggregate concrete are considered, and examples are used to illustrate its inherent advantages.
