CONVENTIONAL SHIP DESIGN

In accordance with the philosophy that trends in ship design will be based solely on economic conditions, design is described in such a manner that the costs can be determined after trade-route conditions are known. There are three basic ship characteristics which reflect construction and operating costs, and which must be known before the multiplicity of characteristics and components can be determined in a design to yield the most profitable ship. These three basic characteristics are description of cargo to be carried, size, and speed.
