THE DIFFERENTIATED WRITTEN DRIVER'S LICENSING TESTS. AN ANALYSIS OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TESTS USED DURING 1973

SKRIFTLIGA DIFFERENTIERADE FOERARPROV. UPPFOELJNING OCH ANALYS AV FOERARPROVENS EGENSKAPER AAR 1973

The written driving license tests introduced in connection with the differentiated driver licensing system of January 1, 1973, were subjected to analysis. The study was carried out on behalf of the National Swedish Road Safety Office and covers the two sets of tests used during 1973. The purpose of the study was to analyse the characteristics of the tests in various respects, the predictability of test characteristics, changes in these characteristics over time, the equivalence of parallel versions of the tests and the qualities of separate test items. The analysis is based on a number of randomly sampled response sheets submitted by license applicants; the samples comprising 4,260 persons in all. The written driver's license tests are composed of a basic test and one or more supplementary tests. The basic test must be taken by all applicants irrespectively of the type of certificate applied for. The supplementary tests are selected according to type of certificate (motorcycle, car/light truck, heavy truck, bus, heavy trailer, the so-called Traffic License and, finally, tractor). The first set of tests, which was used during the first half of 1973, included three parallel versions of the basic test, two parallel versions of the supplementary tests for motorcycles and heavy truck and one for each of the other categories. The second test, introduced in August 1973, comprises six parallel basic test versions and three of each supplementary test except for the tractor test, where only one version is available. The tests are arranged in fixed combinations within six test catalogues.
